Magha Puja falls on the 15th night of the third lunar month. The word "Magha" is the name of the third month abbreviated from "Magha Puja," which means worshipping the Buddha on the full moon day of Magha according to the Indian calendar, or the third month. The fundamental principle that should be practiced is "Ovadha Patimokha," which is a crucial teaching at the heart of Buddhism to lead to liberation. The fundamental principles consist of the Threefold Training, the Four Noble Truths, and the Six Methods.
Apart from that, on Magha Puja Day, four miraculous events occurred simultaneously:
1. The day coincided with the full moon day of the third lunar month
2 When 1,250 arahants spontaneously assembled at Veluvana Temple in Rajgir without prior arrangement to pay homage to the Buddha.
3 All the assembled arahants were Arahants, enlightened individuals who had achieved the highest level of spiritual attainment.
4 All monks have received direct ordination from the Lord Buddha, or "Ehipassiko." Due to four miraculous events, the day of Magha Puja is also known as the "Sangha Day," which means "Gathering of Four Assemblies," where "Magha" translates to four, "Uposatha" means part, and "Sangha" is assembly.
